Harrow Victorious in the 2025 Veteran Darwin

by Andrew Aylwin

For the first time in three years, Harrow fielded a team in the Veteran Darwin at Woking. This event is open to players who are over 75 on the day of the event. It is played during the afternoon of the final of the Senior Darwin. It is a scratch (no handicaps) Stableford foursomes competition played off a revised par of 80. This year, 19 pairs entered.

On a scorching hot afternoon, the Harrow team of Steve Posford and Andrew Aylwin won with 34 points, beating their nearest rivals, Charterhouse and Malvern, by five clear points. According to the Bernard Darwin Secretary, this was both the highest winning score and largest winning margin since the Veteran Darwin began some 35 years ago. It has already been recorded on the Veteran Darwin Board in the Woking Dining Room. For Posford, this was the culmination of his quest for the grand slam of old boys' golf competitions. He has been part of the team that won the Halford Hewitt twice (1975 & 1978), the Bernard Darwin Trophy (2015) and the Senior Darwin 2021.

Harrow also won the subsidiary age allowance event with 35 points, by one point from Malvern. Each team receives extra shots where the combined ages exceed 150 years.  As we were both 78, we received one extra point.
