About the Society

The OHGS has evolved into a very active society which not only supports the school team but also the main old boys' tournaments which is why it was formed in the first place. In addition to subsidising the teams, a number of fixtures are aimed at social golfers so there is something for everyone to enjoy. There are over 30 events on the annual fixture list open to all members on a first come first served basis. Below is a description of some of the events available to all members regardless of handicap, for more information look under Competitions:

The Spring Meeting
Currently held at Royal St Georges Golf Club at Sandwich in Kent, an Open Championship course, on a Friday and Saturday in April or May.
Members play for numerous trophies including for best Stableford scores as well as knock outs for both high and low handicappers. There is a black tie dinner in the clubhouse on the Friday night.

The Autumn Meeting
Currently held at the Royal West Norfolk Golf Club at Brancaster on the North Norfolk coast on a Thursday and Friday in September or October.
Again members play for numerous trophies including for best Stableford scores as well as knock outs for both high and low handicappers. After the black tie dinner on the Thursday night we sing Harrow School Songs using some song books donated to the club many years ago.

The Rix-Hill
This is an annual knock out tournament with the final played at Valderrama Golf Club in Spain. Members play the qualifying rounds at their own golf courses off full handicaps (visitors receiving a couple of extra shots). This is an excellent way of playing some very good courses you may otherwise not enjoy.

Origins
The OHGS was originally formed to provide a subsidy for the Harrow team to play in the 1923 inaugural Halford Hewitt which is the annual public schools scratch foursomes knockout tournament. Today the OHGS continues to provide a subsidy for the Halford Hewitt and other teams but it has also evolved into a wonderful society for less able golfers to enjoy great golf courses and the company of other Old Harrovians.

History Project
The OHGS is currently gathering material in order to compile a "History of The Old Harrovian Golfing Society".  If you have any information which might be of interest please get in touch with George Rothman or Neil Scaife.
