Harrow after a lengthy interlude of years finally won the Bernard Darwin trophy again at Woking beating Malvern, Radley, Repton and then Clifton in the final.
The team was represented by Ashley Brewer, Jeremy Fricker, Stephen Posford, John Sheffield, Nick Tindall and Jamie Warman (Capt).
For Brewer, Tindall and Warman it was a return to winning ways some 40 years on after the three were part of the successful schoolboy Gerald Micklem team who won in successive years back in the early 70’s. For John Sheffield it afforded a second winner’s medal in the event and for Stephen Posford and Jeremy Fricker to be part of the history of Woking’s boards for the first time.
There was an expectation that this team, one of the stronger of recent years, might do well but in the first round there was a close struggle with Malvern. Brewer and Fricker playing top never quite got going in the early holes and although staging a worthy fightback lost 2/1. Tindall and Warman playing bottom wrapped their match up 4/3 which left the overall result riding on the second match result. It required a very gutsy par four from Posford and Sheffield at the last to beat Malvern in this deciding match. Posford faced with a putt with two treacherous breaks across Woking’s glassy green hit the perfect putt from 30 feet dead to close out the match. The fact that once over the putt he took milli-seconds to strike it caused wry amusement around the green from onlookers who knew all too well how analysis causes paralysis or worse!
In the afternoon against Radley the heroes of the morning perhaps feeling their years as the oldest pairing and having enjoyed (quite rightly) a lunchtime glass or two were struggling but a reinvigorated Brewer and Fricker won 5/4 playing top whilst Tindall and Warman won comfortably 6/5 and were under par after just the right amount of Kummel at lunch.
Friday’s weather was again perfect for golf and in the semi-final the opponents were the holders, Repton. Once again Brewer and Fricker played top and were always involved in a dog match which was ultimately called a half because Sheffield and Posford won 3/2, whilst Tindall and Warman won at the back 6/5 again.
So to the final against Clifton. The by-now usual fortification of white Burgundy and Kummel was taken to prepare the team for the afternoon and in a tactic designed to throw the opposition the Harrow pairings were tweaked a touch to spark some freshness anew. Fricker and Sheffield played top and in a closely fought contest succumbed 2/1 to a high class Clifton pair playing well. Behind them Brewer and Posford were involved in a real ding dong match but a run of pars over the closing holes saw them home victorious 3/2. Tindall and Warman also were involved in a close contest but some poor play from Clifton in the closing stretch brought them to the 17th with Harrow dormie 2 up. In the end Harrow were not required to putt out and with polite applause and the final result the Bernard Darwin Cup finally found its way back onto an Harrovian mantelpiece.
Special mention should go to the two Harrovian supporters Andrew Aylwin and Alex Mann who provided moral support throughout as well as a lot of noisy chat especially from Aylwin to inform the Harrow team or opposition of present scores and various technical deficiencies!
All in all it was a very enjoyable few days which comprised competition, friendship, alcohol and laughter in equal measures. Woking and its members could not have been more welcoming nor the course in better condition.
Let us hope this is the start of a run !

We did well, better than usual, to reach the semis. We came very close to beating Marlborough, despite our very poor 2nd pair showing. We should have been all square in the top game going down the 18th, but it was probably the right result, as they won the 18th with a brilliant birdie. Particular thanks to our 1st pair, neither of whom were very keen to play 72 holes, but were wholly game & eager to keep at it. Also our thanks to John Tansley, who kindly stood by for 3 of the 4 rounds, and all our boys.
Very Senior Darwin. I could raise only 1 other player, Ivan Stewart, very keen & fit at 94, who was to have played with me. Since there was a chance that we might be in the final, we had to pull out – quite a long journey for Ivan, and as I wanted to support our boys in the possible final.
