This year’s Halford Hewitt saw us drawn at Royal St. George’s against Eastbourne in round 1. Despite having won against Eastbourne a few years earlier, we knew they were a good, young side. We won two matches early-on, but the tie was level after four matches and so it came down to two Harrow stalwarts, Ashley Brewer and Jeremy Fricker. All square after regulation play, the match went down extra holes. With nothing separating the sides on the 19th and 20th holes, it was finally an imperious birdie two on the 21st hole that saw us through into the second round. If the first round wasn’t already exciting enough, our second round match against Epsom would certainly make for good viewing. Again, the match was tied 2-2 after four games, with only the pairing of Hamish Morrison and Rupert Harmsworth left out on the course and after the opposition holed a clutch 10 foot putt on the 18th hole we were heading down extra holes for the second time in one day. Both sides had chances to win the match on the 19th and 20th holes and it took two miraculous par-saves from Epsom on the 20th and 21st holes to keep them in the match. Unfortunately, a similarly climactic finish as in round 1 was not to be and so a gritty Epsom managed to sneak through on the 22ndhole. Many thanks to those that came down to Sandwich support the team.
