27 members enjoyed Brancaster at its very best with high tides,
fine conditions and testing winds. With
the tides we had to walk on the sea wall to the club for breakfast where we
were marooned for the rest of the day.
The morning’s Stableford was remarkable with three scores of
37 points won by Alastair Hill on countback with his 22 points on the back nine
including a blob on the last hole. When
adjusting for scratch Toby Shirvell’s round became 39 points as he has a
handicap of plus 2 and he was a worthy winner of the George Rothman Scratch Shield.
The knockouts kicked off after lunch followed by eight pairs
of foursomes competing for the Sunley Salvers.
The winning score of 34 points saw James Amies and Anthony Booth to
victory.
A quick change into Black Tie for dinner at the Brancaster
Staithe Sailing Club where we had a good feast followed by Songs and put-ons. Unfortunately, the Old Etonian captain of the
Royal West Norfolk Golf Club (whose two sons went to Harrow) found a way to
excuse himself from attending and several put-ons specially prepared for the
occasion could not be used!
Most of us assembled for a repeat performance the next
morning, this time playing foursomes for the Secretary’s Salvers as well as the
two knockout finals. The Secretary’s
Salvers were won by Jamie Warman and Alastair Hill with 34 points.
The De Rougemont Challenge Cup for the low handicap category
was won by Graham Dunbar who defeated Toby Shirvell on the 19th
hole. Geoffrey Goddard successfully
defended the Gilroy Challenge Cup for the high handicap category, defeating
Andrew Aylwin.
Most competitors left after lunch and prize presentations but anyone wishing to play another round was welcome to do so. Several had never played in the Autumn Meeting before and it was great to welcome new blood to the meeting.
