OHGS Scottish Meeting 2018

by

The OHGS Scottish Meeting’s main event is at Muirfield but other great courses are included for those who make the trip.

North Berwick

Breezy, chilly, overcast … but dry! Course in great condition, as always – 18 holes Stableford full handicap – 15 participants. With three members present, the cost was a mere £30/head rather than the standard £120! Scaife (33 pts) was pipped at the post by Pleydell-Bouverie (34 pts) only to be overtaken himself at the eleventh hour by Hopton with a very fine 35 pts in tricky conditions – the deserved winner of the Claret Jug. Much fun had by all on what has to be one of the most captivating courses in the UK.

Muirfield

What a day! Gorgeous sunshine, clear blue skies, just enough wind to make it challenging. Course in typically impressive condition. 36 holes of foursomes, playing with a different partner am and pm. Your morning score is carried forward and added to your afternoon score. Fabulous lunch and even more fabulous black-tie dinner, with a superb array of wines organised by Blair. Wilson (playing with Goddard in the am and Hopton in the pm) emerges as the eventual winner with two very consistent scores: 30 and 29 pts respectively. Two dozen Pro V1 balls were awarded as the prize! Hopton, playing more good golf, was runner-up with 57 pts.

Luffness New

Another fabulous day of hot sun and cloudless skies. Terrific course as we all know … and a proper club! 18 holes Stableford full handicap. 12 participants. With two members present, and including a super three-course lunch with wine, the total cost was a bargain at less than £70. Our esteemed Hon Sec emerged as a worthy winner with what must surely be a career-best score of 40 pts! He wins a dozen Pro V1’s!

All in all, as good a golfing weekend as can be had anywhere, due in good measure to the impeccable organisation, for which special thanks to Neil, Hew and Archie, and Neil in particular for organising events mixing players of differing abilities and ensuring everyone knew in advance exactly what they were doing!

It was also good to see some younger members and new attendees. And there was wide support in favour of elevating this event to Summer Meeting, fitting in with the traditional Spring & Autumn Meetings.
