Captain's Day at Hankley Common GC on 6th March 2018

by

A meeting at Hankley Common Golf Club that almost didn’t take place as just the day before the greens were still on temporaries and some bunkers still full of snow.

However, we persevered and went ahead along with the 2 other Societies scheduled that day, as greens were put back to normal and further snowmelt overnight made bunkers playable. In fact, it was remarkable that the course had absorbed so much water almost without trace, so playing conditions were in fact excellent.
In the event the meeting consisted of only 6 players, after at least 6 had had to pull out for a variety of reasons, so the Foxes consisting of local member Peter Greenwood, James Hedin and Simon Berry took on the Hawks, made up with John Casson (with Lola), David Wiggin and Stephen Bois for a Stableford contest scored by all 3 in each team. On an almost perfect afternoon for March, the Foxes outscored us Hawks with 100 points v. 94, a creditable performance by all in spite of most peoples’ games being rusty at this time of year.
And the individual best score also being played for turned out rather embarrassingly to be 38 points by your Captain and Match Manager, 3 ahead of nearest rival Peter on 35. Clearly, local knowledge counts!
The day was much enjoyed by all, who universally requested a repeat day for next year.
