Sadly our Bernard Darwin effort this year came to a juddering halt in the first round versus Eton whom we beat in this event last year and in the Halford Hewitt this year. So following the result at Lord’s the old foe had a good month.
The match hinged on the final two matches which went to the 18th after Steve Posford and Jamie Warman won the top match 3/2 (Posford notably hitting the centre of the fairway all day).
Nick Tindall and John Sheffield were 3 under par in their opening holes but were gradually hauled back to all square on the 18th tee by some par golf from the Eton pair. Tindall’s drive found the rough and an impossible lie greeted Sheffield’s second resulting in losing 5 to Eton’s 4.
So now all rested on the final match in which Jerry Fricker and Miles Ruffell were having a very up and down match. Standing one down on the final tee Fricker’s drive found the centre of the fairway whilst Eton hooked behind trees making their par very unlikely. Sadly nerves got the better of Ruffell who pulled his wedge left of the green and Harrow’s chances disappeared in an instant.
Woking golf course was in its usual pristine condition, its welcome as generous as ever and although we had a disappointing tournament we look forward to 2019 when hopefully some of the 2017/16 players will make themselves available again.
