Spring Meeting 2016

by

The annual OHGS Spring Meeting was once again enjoyed at Royal St Georges Golf Club over the 2 days of 22-23 April. There were 29 participants, approx. one third of whom were fresh faces and several under 30, which is very encouraging. The event was ably run by Geoffrey Goddard who we hope will manage this fixture for many years to come. Our congratulations to him for keeping everyone more or less on the straight and narrow, and thanks to all those who helped with the complex job of scoring and making the draws for the afternoon competitions during lunch.

Winners of the 7 competitions are as follows and the complete list can be downloaded here:-

Posford Cup (Scratch) – Jamie Warman, our worthy President with 34 points off 3.

Coronation Cup – Rupert Fisher with 36 off 9 – determination paid off by getting to the tee in good time, and having brought in the winner last year.

Borthwick Cup (from now on for Young Members) – Alastair Climie with 26 off 16.

Blackwell-Carlisle Knock Out Cup lower handicaps – Matthew Gibbens beat Jamie Warman after a devastatingly good last 6 holes in one over.

Trevor Matthews Knock Out Cup higher handicaps – John Wyn-Evans beat Ross Bryan in that final.

Smouha Goblets 2 ball better ball – George Hartley with Alastair Climie on 35 points, who showed great restraint at dinner when the salvers were mistakenly awarded at first to runners up Simon Berry and James Charatan!

Presidents Salvers foursomes – George Olesen with James Latham scoring 29 points.

Congratulations to all these for avoiding some of the many bunkers and pitfalls on the course. Also for everyone’s perseverance in harsh conditions with a persistent strong and cold wind blowing straight off the sea on both days. In spite of this the assembled company came off the course still smiling as they eventually reached the facilities of the warm clubhouse.

We should also mention how impeccably we were looked after by the ever diligent staff in the clubhouse, and for an excellent dinner followed by tolerating a well frequented bar until it closed at midnight.
