To nurture healthy grass roots of the OHGS and by way of a warm-up for the Micklem Trophy, Simon Page very kindly invited a team of OH’s to take on the boys in 18-hole singles matches at Woking on 8 March 2016, also providing a bit of Bernard Darwin practice for the more advanced in years, Harrow being the current holders.
The teams were as follows
For the school:
- Aidan Osobase
- Ed Bayne
- Ollie Connell
- Qassi Gaba
- Rasikan Moodley
Supported by Simon Page and coach Paul Harrison.
And the OH’s:
- Hamish Morrison
- Jan Brugelmann
- Charlie Bick (his last event as an amateur!)
- Mark Speelman
- Jeremy Fricker
The participants
With supporters HalfordHewitt captain Alex Mann, and OHGS captain Stephen Bois, watching with great interest to see the stars of the future and meet their coach Paul Harrison who is evidently doing sterling work with the boys’ golf.
After a splendid lunch in which the OH’s noticeably abstained from the glass of wine kindly provided by Simon Page, the teams prepared themselves for a testing encounter. There ensued a spectacular array of tee shots from the first tee, on an opening hole that should be easy but has a way of humiliating the incautious, and there followed some hard-fought matches with impressive golf being played by the boys. The OH team were therefore relieved to come out on top at the end of the day.
This and several other events in which the OH’s play golf with current school stars are already making a difference to the level of new blood coming into the Halford Hewitt and Grafton Morrish teams and OH golf generally. So the future is currently looking bright for the health of the OHGS at all levels.
