This year, Brancaster enjoyed 8.2 tides causing all golfers to either arrive before 7.00am or face the 20 minute trek across the causeway to the comparative haven of the RWNGC Clubhouse.
In all 22 OHGS members travelled to The Jolly Sailors for dinner on Wednesday for a convivial evening with their various accommodation hosts.
Starting out on a breezy Thursday morning, our golfers battled for the Aubrey Challenge Cup and the George Rothman Special Scratch Salver. Hopes of some golfers who carded a large proportion of stableford scores in the mid 30’s were thwarted by a most impressive performance by Alaister Orchard, who scored 40 pts and carried off both trophies.
Qualifiers for the matchplay knockouts, the De Rougemont Cup (Lower Handicaps) and the Gilroy Challenge Cup (Higher Handicaps), squared up for battle in the afternoon. Those non-qualifiers competed for the Sunley Salvers: with Stephen Bois & James Amies winning in the afternoon with 39 points on countback.
The Black Tie Dinner was held at The Brancaster Sailing Club, the RWNGC Clubhouse being unavailable because of the tides. Four non-participating OH’s joined the Society for dinner, and enjoyed an excellent meal followed by the singing of School Songs. Jeffrey Bonas called the Songs and put-ons.
Friday morning brought stiff 45/50mph winds. Brave were the souls who ventured out that morning ~ swathed in wet weather gear and ready to do battle against the elements and their opponents. Knock out Semi-finalists played through the squalls, progess to the final in the offing. The rest played for the Secretary’s Salvers; with Thomas Olesen & Geoffrey Goddard winning with a score of 27 points ~ scores reflecting the difficult conditions.
In the afternoon, De Rougemont Challenge Cup finalsits, Harry Broomfield prevailed over Alastair Mackenzie, and Nick Carter triumphed over David Norris in the Gilroy Challenge Cup.
