Harrow survives to the second round and continues to build a team for the future.
The OHGS was represented in the Grafton Morrish matchplay finals, held at Hunstanton and Royal West Norfolk Golf Clubs over the last weekend of September.
Our team of three foursomes pairs, Captained by the inveterate Jeremy Fricker, turned out on a gentle Indian Summer’s morning at Hunstanton to play St Lawrence, Ramsgate. Jeremy Fricker & Will Bain teed off first and despite birdying the first hole found themselves in a hard-fought battle which they managed to win 2/1. Second off was the pairing of Cecil Boex & Lloyd Edwards, who birdied three of the first six holes to gain a good lead and eventually win 6/5, being an impressive one under par for their 13 holes. The final pairing of Miles Ruffell & Charles Holland also got away to fast start and similarly won 6/5 shooting a commendable level par for the thirteen holes of their match!
So on to the second round at Brancaster in the afternoon against the holders, Solihull, a strong team with a following of uniformed loyal supporters that would certainly do credit to the likes of Aston Villa. This proved a much tougher proposition and despite a spirited fight with some big putts dropping (unusually for Harrow!) only the classy Boex/Edwards combination was able to defeat the opposition 3&2, both other pairs losing by a similar margin.
Despite the disappointment of a second round exit there were many encouraging signs coming out of this team’s performance. Will Bain is Harrow’s new Halford Hewitt Captain and his potential Hewitt team has gained much valuable fuel from the performances and relationship-building that developed in the pressure of those Grafton Morrish matches. It was also excellent to have a new high-quality player in Lloyd Edwards adding to Harrow’s future golfing strength.
