Report from Phil Hill, HH Captain, on this year”s performance. Phil has decided to retire as HH Captain after 3 years. Will Bain, OHGS Committee member, is taking over.
After the dizzy heights of the semi-finals of the Halford Hewitt in 2008, OHGS”s best result in the premier Public Schools Old Boys golf event for a decade, the OHGS squad assembled for 2009 was stronger still – and expectations were accordingly high. OHGS had a tough draw – a much improved Old Wykehamist side in round 1 at Deal, and one of Loretto or Merchiston in round 2. Strong winds blew on the day of round 1, and though Jamie Warman and Kunal Rawal registered the first point of the afternoon with a crushing win at the top of the order, pairs 2, 4 & 5 all struggled to control the ball flight and their short games and Winchester notched the 3 points required to go through. In Hewitt tradition, the 3rd match involving Phil Hill, OHGS Hewitt captain, and Nick Tindall, was called a half though OHGS were in the marginal ascendancy. Tonbridge went on to win the 2009 Hewitt – they have been the predominant school in the event for 15 years now. Nonetheless, OHGS looks forward to the 2010 edition with continued optimism and enthusiasm, under the new captaincy of Will Bain.
